The Impact of Sapphire Material Quality on the HB-LED Device Manufacturing Process (587.45 KB)
This document presents the final results of a study performed by GT Advanced Technologies (GT) on the effects of sapphire material quality on the High Brightness (HB)-LED device manufacturing process. This study is part of a larger comprehensive material characterization project, which was initiated by GT to study the effects of sapphire material properties on the entire manufacturing process in the HB LED value chain, and to provide data indicating the “Metrics that Matter” for driving higher yields and profits in the sapphire material and LED industries.
The Path to High Value HB-LEDs and Epi-Wafers Begins with GT ASF™-Grown Sapphire (1.57 MB)
Throughout the sapphire material characterization project over 60 variables of data were recorded allowing for an in-depth, blind study analysis that provided insight into the critical properties of sapphire or the “Metrics that Matter”. A correlation analysis was performed on the measured data variables relating to sapphire material, throughout the HB-LED manufacturing value chain. The broad data categories included sapphire material intrinsic properties, epi-wafer manufacturing and HB-LED performance variables. The evaluated sapphire material samples included material grown using ASF, KY and HEM-like growth techniques and covered a range of different material qualities.
Sapphire Case Study - The Impact of Sapphire Color on HB LED Manufacturing (1.69 MB)
In January of 2011, GT Advanced Technologies initiated an extensive sapphire material qualification project to determine the sapphire material “Metrics that Matter” in the manufacturing processes of HB LED devices. The studies in this paper were conducted with reputable third parties to examine how, if at all, the pink hue exhibited by sapphire produced in GT Advanced Technologies’ Advanced Sapphire Furnace (ASF™) impacts the quality of LED wafers or the standard LED manufacturing process. The study concludes that there is no correlation between the trace color found in the wafers and the color of the GT ASFgrown material thus validating that the light pink hue of GT ASF sapphire at the boule and core level has no effect on LED wafer color.

GT Advanced Technologies’ Characterization of Sapphire Material Project GT Advanced Technologies is committed to continuously pushing the boundaries of single crystal sapphire technology to drive toward higher yields of 2”, 4” and 6” wafers and beyond, as well as providing material that improves downstream yields in LED manufacturing. In January of 2011, GT initiated an extensive sapphire material qualifi cation project to determine the sapphire material “Metrics that Matter” in the manufacturing processes of HB LED devices. The project has been designed to evaluate the eff ects of sapphire material on yields in LED manufacturing and objectively evaluate properties and diff erences between diff erent sapphire growth techniques.
